Are you feeling the lag of those bigger tires or plan on adding some bigger tires? Anything more than a couple of sizes larger and you will need some gearing help. Our supplier has been making top quality Toyota gears for years. They are designed to run quiet and last longer than other aftermarket gear sets. Take your pick of several different ratios for each Toyota axle. Most stock axles run 4.11 gearing with around a 30" tire so we recommend 4.56 gears for 32" tires, 4.88's for 33"-34" tires, and 5.29 for 35" tires and up. We also carry 5.71 Gears but do NOT suggest them for heavy duty off road use.

Info on Trail-Creeper Gears:

RING & PINION BREAK-IN PROCEDURE

All new 3rd members require a break-in period to prevent damage from overheating. Any overloading or over-heating during this periods can cause the gear oil to break down resulting in ring & pinion failure.

  • After installation drive lightly for 20-30 minutes and then allow the diff to cool for at least two hours.
  • Avoid heavy throttle use during the first 500 miles.
  • Do not tow a trailer during the first 500 miles.
  • Change oil after 500 miles to remove any particles suspended in the oil.

This may seem unnecessary but it is very easy to damage the differential by loading it before the gear set is completely run in. New ring & pinion gears create excess heat when they are new. This excess heat can damage the heat treatment of the gears.

 PLEASE NOTE:  Factory 4.88 Differentials have a unique third member housing.  The pinion gear is closer to the ring than it is in any other ratio.  You can not use our aftermarket ring and pinion sets in a factory 4.88 housing.
