What differentials do my Tacoma or 4Runner have in the rear?
In the rear, Tacoma's and 4Runners equipped with E-lockers, usually TRD Models had a 8" Ring and Pinion known in the Earlier trucks as "V6" Gears.
Non e-locking Tacoma's were equipped with a differential sometimes called an 8.4" or 8.25" differential, but the ring gear actually measures 8". There is additional strength to these differentials, because they have a larger pinon gear shaft and the bearing caps are reinforced with a bridge that goes across the bearing caps much like an engine block girdle.
Non Elocker 4Runners were equipped with a standard 8" V6 Style rear differential similar to the '86-95 Pickups and '88-95 4Runners.
What differential does my Tacoma or 4Runner have in the front?
1995.5-2003 Tacoma's and 1996-2002 4Runners have a high pinion 7.5" differential, sometimes called the "Late" 7.5 Differential or "REV" 7.5 Differential. This is because it has reverse rotation gears. The differential is offset to the drivers side.
What if I have a 2004 Tacoma? What is the front differential?
If you have a 2004 Tacoma you may have what is called the "Clamshell" differential. To identify if you have this differential it is very simple, if the actuator for the differential is located on the front side of the diff, then you have the "clamshell". if it is located on the backside of the differential, you have the 1995.5-2003 Tacoma style differential and can use any 7.5 Reverse Rotation gear.
